Toby Carvery has saved over 850,000 meals from going to waste to date by working with leading surplus food app, Too Good To Go. This year, they are on a mission to save more than one million meals by the end of 2024.

Toby Carvery and Too Good To Go are now in their third year of working together. Since launching the partnership in 2021, Toby Carvery has saved 854,466 meals, also known as Surprise Bags, from going to waste.

In 2023 alone, 414,309 bags were saved which is 57,279 bags more than 2022. This equates to 1.8 million kilograms of CO2e avoided — the same as it would take to make 2,066 flights from London to New York, brew 108,226 barrels of beer and showering continuously for 11.6 years.

Packaged at the end of the day, Toby Carvery Surprise Bags contain a variety of surplus, unsold food from the delicious carvery menu that can include anything from multiple Yorkshire puddings to copious amounts of roast potatoes and sliced meats.

Available from as little as £2.29 for the vegetarian option and £3.29 to include meat, guests to Toby Carvery can enjoy high-quality roasts for a great price. With a limited number of bags available each day, guests must act quickly to secure their Surprise Bags.

All users need to do is pay through the Too Good To Go app, receive a time slot before closing time and collect their Surprise Bag.

Martin Gosling, Operations Director at Toby Carvery, said: “2023 was an incredible year for fighting food waste at Toby Carvery and we’re so pleased to be continuing our partnership with Too Good To Go.

“As Home of the Roast, we take great care in preparing each ingredient in every kitchen so guests can enjoy the perfect roast any day of the week, so it’s rewarding to see our specially trained chefs’ efforts not going to waste and our Surprise Bags leaving a positive impact on the nation and planet.

“We’re planning to build on this in 2024 and we will save more than one million meals by the end of the year.”

Sophie Trueman, UK Managing Director at Too Good To Go, added: “Toby Carvery has had a really successful year and I know our app users across the country have been itching to get their hands on a delicious Toby roast while helping to reduce food waste and its impact on the planet.

“Our partnership shows that you can still enjoy your favourite comfort food, help the planet and get a great deal, making Toby Carvery’s Surprise Bags a win-win!”
