IKEA’s vegan hotdogs have proven to be successful, after they have reached sales of nearly a million of the new option sold around Europe. The hotdog achieved a 95 per cent approval rate when trialled in Malmö last May.

The hotdog launched in Europe, Canada and the US in the last few months, and has been developed as an alternative to meat hotdogs, which are popular at IKEA. It is made from kale, carrot, potato, red lentils and spices, but alongside being a plant-based alternative to meat, it’s also one of IKEA’s steps to reduce their carbon footprint.

The vegan hotdogs are accountable for seven times less carbon emissions than the meat option. Michael La Cour, managing director at IKEA Food Services AB, said: “We are facing challenges in the food production industry today and one of those challenges is that we need to be more sustainable.

“With the global reach that we have at IKEA we believe that we have a responsibility and a great opportunity to serve food that is good for the planet.”

IKEA are gradually introducing more plant-based meals into their stores’ restaurants, with the announcement of vegan ice cream arriving in UK stores in 2019 and vegan doughnuts already available.

The Swedish furniture retailer has introduced a sustainability programme, the People and Planet initiative, which seeks to reduce their carbon emissions, use recycled and recyclable materials.
