Lakes cake maker picks up national award

Lisa Smith, owner of Ginger Bakers, discovered that the Lakes based cake bakery had picked up a Great Taste award for one of their products.

This year submissions were received from 106 countries around the globe, with a total of 12,777 products sent in to be judged. Ginger Bakers collected a 1-star Great Taste award for their vegan and gluten free Sour Cherry & Brazil Nut Boost Bar, bringing their tally up to 15 Great Taste awards awarded since 2006.

Judging was a little different this year as a result of Covid-19, but despite the challenges that has presented the 144 judges have carried out their work to the same exacting standards seen in previous years, utilising remote and socially distanced judging sessions throughout the summer.

This year’s renowned panel included the likes of celebrated Spanish chef, José Pizarro, food writer and cook, Xanthe Clay, Kavi Thakrar co-founder of Dishoom and baker and author, Martha Collison, as well as some of the UK’s leading food buyers from Selfridges, Fortnum & Mason and Waitrose.

Lisa Smith, owner of Ginger Bakers, said: “Great Taste awards are among the most coveted of all food and drink awards, they showcase outstanding products and highlight to consumers that those lucky enough to win an award have received a reliable stamp of excellence. Winning an accolade like this is hugely important for a small family business like ours and can open up all sorts of potential business opportunities. Alongside that winning recognition for what we do each and every day is massively uplifting for the team, especially considering the current circumstances, it provided a great lift for us all.’’
