Müller Milk & Ingredients seeks to recruit 75 HGV drivers

Müller Milk & Ingredients is looking to recruit 75 HGV drivers, to enable the business to further build upon first class service levels for its private label dairy customers.

The recruitment push was confirmed at a recent visit to Müller’s Manchester depot by the Minister for Defence People and Veterans, and Aldershot MP, Leo Docherty, and representatives from the non-profit organisation, Veterans into Logistics.

The purpose of the visit was to see first-hand how Müller is successfully working with Veterans into Logistics to place highly-trained ex-military personnel into work as drivers within the logistics industry. Through its partnership to date, Müller has hired 30 veterans in full time employment as HGV drivers.

The business is also finding internal solutions to support and help potential candidates gain their driver qualifications swiftly. Müller has hired its first ever in-house driver examiner, accelerating the end-to-end qualification process from up to 12 months to 8 weeks, with 40 new drivers qualifying in April.

Müller has also further developed its apprenticeship scheme and in-house “Warehouse to Wheels” training programme, which has seen 67 individuals qualify as full time HGV drivers, with more currently progressing through their training.

New employees will be given the appropriate training, depending on experience, as well as a range of employment benefits.

Liam McNamara, Joint Chief Executive Officer at Müller Milk & Ingredients said:

“We know that first-class customer service is crucial for our retail partners. The vast majority of our logistics operations are in-house, rather than outsourced to a third-party, and despite the industry wide driver shortages in 2021, this ensured successful delivery of over 99% of our deliveries.

“As labour shortages continue to be one of the key issues facing the food supply chain, we have built some outstanding partnerships with organisations like Veterans into Logistics, and implemented some unique thinking within our own business to help tackle this problem ourselves.

“So it is great to see this outstanding work being recognised by the Minister for Defence People and Veterans.

“We have 75 great HGV driver opportunities, across our sites, to help us deliver our products. If you have the skills and qualifications, and want to help with our aim to become Britain’s private label dairy leader, please do get in touch.”

Minister for Defence People and Veterans Leo Docherty said:

“I was delighted to meet with veterans working at Müller Milk & Ingredients, to understand how their new roles as HGV drivers are benefiting the economy and why military veterans make brilliant HGV drivers.

“The Veterans into Logistics partnership with Müller Milk & Ingredients highlights how members of the armed forces can seamlessly transition into roles that maximise the skills learnt in service.”

To achieve its 99% service levels in 2021, MMI was able to leverage its logistics partnership with sister company Culina Group, a leading UK based food and drinks logistics provider with over 5,000 vehicles, 22,000 employees at peak and 20 million square feet of warehousing.
