Hugh Phillips Gower Butcher is launching its new retail website, bestonlinebutcher.co.uk, at the Royal Welsh Show in Builth Wells this Wednesday. The website enables customers all over the UK to buy its top quality Welsh meat.

Champion strong man David Todd will also be taking part, showing off the strength that makes him an indispensable employee at Hugh Phillips.

Hugh Phillips Gower Butcher is renowned for the quality of its produce, all of which is Welsh and most of which comes through its own abattoir, ensuring food miles are kept low and quality is ensured.

Owner Catherine Butler, who took over the business from her father Hugh Phillips earlier this year, decided to launch a retail website after seeing how many customers made long trips to buy meat from the Hugh Phillips stall on Swansea Market.

“People are always telling us they can’t get meat of this quality closer to home, so we decided to bring it to them,” she said.

Besides all the usual butchery produce, the website sells Hugh Phillips’ famous faggots – made to Catherine’s gran’s recipe, excellent home cured bacon and legs of lamb dressed the traditional way with caul fat, which makes them self basting. Hugh Phillips also produces its own sausages, burgers, kebabs and barbeque meats.

“Everything we sell on our stall is available from the website to be delivered by courier direct to your door,” says Catherine. “We’ve done a lot of research into how to best package it and will be insulating our boxes with special wool wadding, which is environmentally friendly, biodegradable and re-usable.”

The site is live now, with produce including that famous Welsh delicacy, Gower salt marsh lamb; seasonal specialities; and meat boxes. Samples of some of Hugh Phillips’ produce will be offered to visitors to the food tent at the Royal Welsh Show on Wednesday, and David Todd will be demonstrating the strength that has made him 2017 winner of Wales’ Strongest Man Under 80 kilos.

“We’re very excited about our visit to the Royal Welsh Show,” said Catherine. “People will have a chance to sample the produce that we’re so proud of and David’s weightlifting is bound to be entertaining – but there’s also serious intent behind our appearance there: we want to spread the word that our beautiful Welsh produce is now available online, helping us reach far more customers than ever before. It marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for Hugh Phillips Gower Butcher.”
