Waitrose & Partners Brings Back Exclusive Pineberries.

12 April, 19

After the successful launch of the Pineberry in 2010, Waitrose & Partners is once again stocking this quirky fruit due to popular demand.

The unique, tiny berries are white and covered in red pips and has the same genetic make-up as a traditional strawberry. However they have the aromatic smell and juicy, sweet and acidic taste usually associated with pineapples – which inspired the name ‘Pineberries’.

They begin life as green berries and then become slightly white. By the time its deep laying seeds turn dark red this white fruit is ripe.

Nicki Baggott, Soft Fruit Buyer for Waitrose & Partners, says: “It’s been nearly ten years since we launched Pineberries in our range. Our growers have been working to improve the variety by offering slightly larger sized berries with an improved taste and an increased shelf-life. I’m sure our customers will be thrilled to see these delightful little berries back on our shelves.”

Waitrose is the only supermarket to have ever sold pineberries in the UK and they will be available in 43 stores nationwide for the next six weeks, £4.00 for 100g.
